National Library of Israel
This month, we are featuring the National Library of Israel’s collection of periodicals—specifically, twelve digitized newspapers published in Ladino. The collection spans from as early as 1872 with Istanbul’s El Tiempo to as late as 1948 with New York City’s La Vara. Explore both long-standing and short-lived newspapers printed in Ladino using Rashi and Meruba characters from across the Sephardic world, including Cairo, Istanbul, Izmir, New York City, Salonica, and Sarajevo. This treasure trove contains thousands of pages of rich content. PRO TIP: If you are able to type in Ladino using Hebrew characters, you can search for any keyword or term in the search bar.
When browsing the collection, select “Ladino” from the Language dropdown menu. You can also explore periodicals in many other languages!
